2. Cite three examples of MarkTwain's use of humor in these chapters.
3. Consider "mob mentality." Give examples where characters in the episodes "go along with the crowd."
1. The king and duke begin with scamming huck and jim saying they are of royality. we later find out that they are horrible men who want nothimg more then to scam money aways from innocent people and drink it away. they scam on the town meeting when they basically steal over 800 from the poeple by saying they were pirates trying to convert other pirates. Again they scam the sisters by saying they are thier long lost uncle and steals thier money.
2. When the Duke messes up shakespear soliloqy is funny, and when king talks about his great grandfather being hte eldest son of the duke of bridgewater is alos humorful.
3. when boggs get shot they rally up to go kill the man who shot him. on one really stops to make the right descion. you can ever agrue that the people had mob mentailty when they allowed boggs to go off on his drunken spree after having been warned. when people began making an effort to calm him down it was already to late. and when the king and duke put on thier shows all it takes is for one person to say hey lets go and the whole town gets talking. people are very easyily influenced.

1. the duke and the king scammed huck and jim, the townspeople, and the women and children of the town.
2.when huck and jim go along with the duke and the king's lies, the change of the monolouge and the king's heritage
3. sherburn follows the crowd and shoots the drunks, the drunks go along by entertaining, and the crowd goes along with the duke and the king.

rst example of on of the duke and kings scams would be when they first met Huck and Jim and lied to them about who they were and what kind of backgrounds they had. Another example of on the their scams would be when they put on the "Royal Nonesuch" and charged the town money for a show with no point. They continued to put on the show for multiple days cheating the rest of the town. The last example of a scam would be when they allowed only men to the show. This caused a want for all men in the town to go because it was thought to be exclusive.
2. One example of Mark Twain's use of humor would be when the tell Huck and Jim a lie of their backgrounds and their "royalty," the changing of the soliloquy, and also when they paint Jim blue.
3. One of the most outstanding examples of "mob mentality" in the novel is when the first person in the town suggests the lynching and the whole town goes along with the idea. Another example would be when everyone donates their money after one person donates to the king and his sob story. (Taryn Miller)
1. First, The Dauphin and the Duke scam Huck and Jim, then the king tricks the church service into giving him over eighty dollars by convincing them that he is a pirate and that their church service has changed his life. Finally, their "Shakespearean rendition" cheats the town out of their money.
2. Humor is first used when the King and Duke try to convince Huck and Jim that they are royalty. Second, when the King tries to say the Duke's soliloquy. Third, when the King runs around naked on the stage.
3. All of the women and townspeople crowding the King to help support him and his ambitions to make the pirates change their ways. Also, When the drunk, Boggs is shot by Sherburn, causing the town to riot and want to lynch Sherburn. (Rachel H.)
Great input Rachel! (Stuart)
1. Their first scam was when they told Jim and Huck that they were kings and dukes. The second time they put on a Skakespearian show for a really expensive price but the show is extremely short. And the last night of the show, they collect the money and leave.
2. The Duke's soliloquy, when the duke and the king paint Jim blue, and when they tell Jim and Huck they are royality.
3. When Boggs, the town drunk, is shot by Sherburn that town wants to lynch him.(Taylor)
1. One of their scams is when the play the "Royal Nonesuch". A second is when they pretend to be Peter Wilks' brother. And a third is when they dress up Jim as an Arab.
2. 1) The Duke's repitition of Shakesperes solioquy 2) When they paint Jim blue 3) The lie of the King and Duke about their ancestry
3. When all the people crowd around Boggs after he has been shot, and afterwords when the people want to lynch Sherburn.
1. First, they pretend to be Peter Wilks's brother. Second, they put on a show of Shakespearian works. And lastly, they collect the money and leave.
2. 1. When the King and Duke paint Jim blue, 2. When they tell Jim and Huck that they are royalty, 3. and Twain also uses humor at the circus scene.
3. At the camp meeting, everybody went along with taking up a collection for the King. (Haley)
1. First, they put on a show of Shakespearian works. They say that women and children are not allowed so that it will sell better. On the third show, they snuck out to avoid angry mobs. Secondly, they paint Jim blue and put up a sign saying he's a drowned Arab so that they can travel during the day. Lastly, they pretend to be Peter Wilks's brothers.
2. Twain uses humor when the king and the duke are practicing Shakespeare and mixing it all up. He also demonstrates humor in all the schemes of the king and the duke, such as the posters they make advertizing a show only for men because that's how they can make the most profit. Lastly, there is humor found in the man that fakes drunk and fools the ringmaster at the circus.
3. The biggest example of the crowd mentality is when Sherburn shoots Boggs and they all come together to lynch him. The mob soon dissipates though because Sherburn sees that they are just together because that is what everyone was doing and that there was no actual passion behind it in most of them.
(Amy A.)
1. First they take up money at a show that is super short and super expensive so they rip off the town. They also say that Jim was an Arab and in the next town they make up a story about how they are sad over the death of Peter Wilk's. It makes Huck sick to the stomach over how pathetic the human race is.
2. Twain uses humor at the circus scene. Also when he has the duke and dauphin paint Jim BLUE! and all the shows the two people perform and destroy great stories.
3. One example is when the crowd wants to lynch Sherburn but after his speech the crowd disperses. Another example is all the lies the duke and dauphin tell- like when the duke gets people to believe that he is a transformed pirate and collects eighty dollars.
(Rachael)
1.The king and duke come up with the “brilliant” idea of putting on a Shakespearian play. They charged 50 cent for each show and women were not allowed. 2. A. The King totally changes the text in Hamlet’s Soliloquy into something different. B. They paint Jim blue so he looks like a drowned Arab. C. The duke and the king also make posters to advertise the play. However, on the posters it says that famous actors are playing the roles which is clearly not the case. 3. All the people agree to go see the play and the people want Sherburn to be lynched after one person suggested it. (Laura)
1. First they skip town before giving the last show to escape an angry mob and take all the money, then they tie Jim up and put up a sign that said he was an Arab to avoid suspicion while they travel by day, and finally they pretend to be Peter Wilkes's brothers.
2. First Twain uses humor when the Duke and the Dauphin add their own words into the dialogue when quoting Shakespeare, then they paint Jim blue even though you can imagine how unrealistic it would look, and finally they trick the ringmaster.
3. One obvious example is when just because one man says to lynch Sherburn, a whole crowd follows and they all go after him.(Elizabeth)
1. The King and the Duke charge 50 cent for a show, men only, that only consisted of the Duke crawling around. Then they convinded the men to tell everyone in the town to come to their show so they could be fooled as well. on the third day of the show, to avoid being hit with food, they guys slipped out the back door and made a run for it. Also the King comes up with a way to keep Jim safe during the daytime. They painted him to look like a drowned Arab and posted a sign explaining not to touch him. It is obvious the Duke and the King are going to try to get the late Peter Wilk's will money by pretending to be long-lost brothers.
2. Mark Twain completely murders Hamlet's soliloquy
The posters exagerate the talents of the King and Duke.
The prank played on the ring master at the circus
3. - At the camp meeting everybody went along with taking up a collection for the King.
- All of the men at the Duke and King's show agree to trick all of the other town people by saying that the show was amazing.
(Shelby)
1) The show they put on wasnt very long and had little if any point. They carried this show on for another night to cheat the rest of the town. On the third night, they took up the money and then sailed down the river leaving their paying customers waiting in their seats. 2) Hamlet's soliloquy was given words i've never heard of. they mislead people in everything they did. they painted Jim blue and tied him up. he looked crazy and had a sign to prove it. 3) When the entire town of Pokeville goes after Colonel Shey-something. they grap clothes off of clothesline to hang him at the first chanc they got
~Kyle
1. The king pretends he is a pirate that wants to help other priates see the error of their ways and collects money from a church group. The king and the duke also hold a show for fifty cents that only consisted of them crawling on the floor. They scam the same city again when on the third day they did not show up for the play.
2. He butchers up Hamlet's soliloquy.
He makes fun of the Arkansaw people and the act of lynching.
He has the ringmaster tricked.
3. In Arkansaw when the people go along with the idea of lynching Sherburn, after one person suggests it. (alex j)
1. The King tricked the locals in the first town they get to. He pretends like he wants to turn all the pirates in India into nice people. The people are very happy to help him accomplish this noble goal. The Kind and the Duke also scam a different town by making a play that seems to be funny and good. People come but do not complain because they do not want to be the laughing-stock of the town. So they tell all the other people that it was great. On the 3rd day of the play, people come prepared to throw rotten food at the 2 "noblemen". The two of them slip out of the back and the raft is quickly pushed out. The 3rd scam has not happened yet. The Duke and the King will probably steal Mr. Wilks money, pretending to be the brothers.
2. "To be or not to be, that is the bare bodkin..."
"[King Henry VIII] used to marry a new wife every day, and chop off her head next morning."
"Sick Arab -- but harmless when not out of his head."
3. When one person suggested it, everybody in the town agreed to lynching Sherburn.
Everybody at the church meeting give money to the fraudulent King.
(Caron)
1. the scam of the royal nunsuch, them tricking the church service into giving them money to convert the Indian Ocean pirates to christianity, and finaly they pretend to be peter wilks to get the wilks family fortune.
2. when he cuts up skakespearian works together to get what the duke says, when the ppl went to lynch sherbern and all the ppl who saw the plat went along with the lynching, when huck sees the drunken cowboy
3. when the ppl of the play go along w/ the pl, to lynch Colonel sherbern, at the church where they gave money to the king and duke, and when a whole lot of ppl go to see the play (hayden)
1. First they came up with the idea of putting on a Shakespearean show for 50 cents. Another was that they made a poster to make people think that Jim wasn’t black. Lastly, they pretend to be Peter Wilks’ brothers to get the fortune.
2. When they paint Jim blue, in the soliloquy, and when he tricks the ringmaster.
3. All the people want Sherburn to be lynched after one person suggested it. (Kati Causey)
1. When they scam the town by making them pay for a terrible 2 minute show, when they leave town before the third show to avoid getting rotten food thrown at them, and when the king devises a way to keep people away from Jim while everybody else is in town.
2. He makes fun of hamlet, he makes fun of the names and titles of English playwrights, and he makes fun of the Arkansas people at the end of chapter 22.
3.They go along with the crowd when they march to Colonel Shepton's house and when they listen to the man telling them what to do after they are scamed by the duke and the dauphin. (Stuart)
1. At the first town the king and the duke charge the people for a very short show that is simply the king crawling around, they then convince the audience to tell their friends to come the next night and see the show then on the third night most of the townspeople come and the king and the duke collect the admission fee and then skip out before the show begins to avoid having rotten food thrown at them by the townspeople.
2. When the duke gives his Hamlet soliloquy he botches it terribly, including bits and pieces from other Shakespeare plays like Macbeth. Twain also pokes fun at English playwrights and actors as well as the infamous King Henry VIII.
3. After Sherburn guns down the innocent Boggs the townspeople all rush to Sherburn's house to lynch him, but he stands and insults them and they return to the town without harming him. (Niki H)
1. The first scam is charging fifty cents to see a show that only consists of somebody crawling around. The second scam is when they convinced their audiences to tell everyone to come see the play, so they could be tricked as well. And lastly, is the fact that after realizing that food would be thrown on stage at them during a performance, they run out of the building.
2. “To be or not to be, that is the bare bodkin…”
They paint Jim blue to make him look like a “sick Arab”
The posters that were put up made it seem like some great Shakespearean actors would be performing.
3. After one person casually suggesting lynching Sherburn, then the whole town goes along with it. Also, tricking the people into suggesting that others go see the play performance is an example of the “mob mentality when characters go along with the crowd.” (Caroline R.)
1. THe Duke and the King charge 50 cents for a "play" that really is not a play, and somehow manage to get more people to come back the next two days of the performance. The King gets some townspeopel to donate money to his cause for converting pirates. The Duke and the King pretend that they are brotehrs who have shown up a day too late to see their dying brother so that they can get the money he buried.
2. Huck's ignorance of the circus is humorous because he does not realize that things were planned beforehand. Huck is also funny when he is telling Jim about kings, and he gets the history mixed up. The sign the Duke made for Jim about an Arab who was only harmful when out of his head was kind of funny.
3. The townspeople who see Boggs get shot are caught up in the excitement and go along with one person's idea of lynching Colonel Sherburn. The group that sees the second "play" follow one person's lead when they suggest that they tell everyone else that it was great so they would not be the only fools.
(Jennifer)
1. The Duke and the king come up with this scheme to put on a "play". They advertise for a Shakespeare show and a "royal nonesuch" show. Also, the King makes a speech and a religious meeting about how he wanted to convert all the pirates of the Indian Ocean to the straight and narrow. He gets a lot of monetary donations. Also, they wanted to keep Jim safe if anyone got suspicious of their raft and the people on board. So they paint Jim blue and put a sign in front of him saying that he was a sick Arab that was kind of crazy.
2. Mark Twain has the king completely butcher Shakespeare's Hamlet sililoquey. They advertise on the play bill signs that these very famous Shakespearean actors are going to be in the show. And painting Jim blue are all examples of Twain's humor.
3. When the people want to lynch Sherburn for shooting Boggs and the all the townspeople that saw the "play" all went along with the mob mentality. (Lisa)
1. The Duke and King put on a show that costs 50 cents to get into. They pretend they are Peter Wilks' brothers, and they make a poster that helps Jim.
2. He makes fun of Hamlet, the ringmaster was actually part of the show, and the Duke and the King paint Jim blue.
3. People go along with the crowd when they started offering money for the pirates, they all want to lynch Colonel Sherburn, and everyone wants to go see the play. (Kristin)
1) They put on a show and charge the people 50 cents and then everything is built up only to reveal the king dancing around naked with body paint on. The second major prank they pull for money is pretending to be a family that they aren't in order to get some funeral money. The duke also uses his wit in order to let them pass on the waters during the day by playing off Jim as a "runaway slave".
2) Jim is painted blue. Also a humorous scence is when Huck and Joanna are in the kitchen and she is asking him questions about his hometown and church and the king, and Huck keeps digging his own grave and then having to cleverly lie his way out of it. The pranks of the Duke and the Dauphin are quite humorous also, for instance when the doctor is trying to state a fact to all of the people that those two are frauds and the kings just says, " OK, doctor." in a sarcastic tone.
3) Once the three daughters of the late father believe that the king and the duke are who they say they are. Which are the brothers of their deceased father, everyone else in the town believes them and then they wont listen to the doctor's reasonable thinking. Everyone in the town jumped on the band wagon and didn't listen to what anyone had to say.
(A.J.)
1. They put on a show of their own mix of Shakespeare. They call it the "Shakesperian Nonesuch," I believe. The show costs 50 cents, which is a scam. "The king" also pretends he is a pirate from the Indian Ocean, a scam to get money from the people at the camp meeting. Their biggest scam is when the duke and king pretend to be brothers of Peter Wilks, in order to get his fortune.
2. When they paint Jim blue to be a sunken A-rab, Hamlets's soliloquy, and when the ringmaster is tricked.
3. When the town drunk, Boggs, is shot. The whole town decides to lynch Sherbern, but he insults them and pretty much the whole Southern way of things. So they back down and run away. (Caroline Lassiter)
1.They both tell Huck and Jim that they are lost royalty (The King= King of France and The Duke= used to be richest man on earth), the king fools a congregation that he is a reformed pirate from the Indian Ocean who needs money to go back and reform the other pirates, and they pretend to be English relatives of the Wilkses's, in order to get some of the fortune that a family member left behind after he died.
2. The mangled Hamlet soliloquy, the painting of Jim blue, and the fact that they started a royal play company called the Shakespearean Nonesuch.
3. Some examples of mob mentality include when a crowd gathers to lynch Boggs's killer, Colonel Sherburn; when the women in the tricked congregation eagerly want to help the King with his Indian Ocean pirate problem by hugging him and giving him a lot of money. (Danny Sale)
